The Russian Football Association wants to appeal to the International Sports Court (CAS) against the exclusion from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and all international competitions. The association announced the objection on Thursday.
Russia’s national team should have faced Poland in the World Cup playoffs on March 24. On Monday, however, the country was banned from all competitions by the world governing body FIFA and the European Football Union UEFA in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian federation will now demand the reinstatement of all men’s and women’s national teams in all competitions and will also apply to the CAS for an “accelerated procedure” in this matter. Opponents Poland had already announced that they would not play against Russia in the playoffs.
From the association’s point of view, there is “no legal basis” for the decision by FIFA and UEFA. The decision was made “under pressure” from the opposing associations, and one was not allowed to present one’s own position.
The association had already criticized the decision as “discriminatory” on Monday. The World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 21st to December 18th.
