The series is broken, the number one eliminated: After 37 wins in a row, Iga Swiatek lost another tennis match and thus missed the round of 16 in Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old Pole surprisingly lost in the third round to the experienced French player Alizé Cornet 4:6, 2:6.
Swiatek had been dominating the WTA Tour at will for months, winning six tournaments including the French Open and topping the world rankings. However, she was unfamiliar with the grass in Wimbledon, and in the second round she had to go through three sets against the outsider Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove from the Netherlands.
Against Cornet was the last stop. The number 37 in the ranking is playing her 62nd Grand Slam tournament in a row at the All England Club, setting the record of the Japanese Ai Sugiyama.
For her it was the fourth victory over a world number one, in 2014 she had also beaten the top seeded Serena Williams in the third round. The round of 16 was her best result at Wimbledon so far.
