Wimmer’s Rabona show makes Arminia cheer

Patrick Wimmer does magic, Arminia Bielefeld wins: East Westphalia’s hopes for another season in the upper house are growing.

Even Frank Kramer was amazed. Of course because of the exclamation mark in the relegation battle, also because of Arminia Bielefeld’s remarkable series. Above all, however, the spectacular Rabona show by ball artist Patrick Wimmer impressed the East Westphalia coach. “He does crazy things sometimes,” Kramer said, laughing.

Almost single-handedly, Wimmer disenchanted the European Cup contender Eintracht Frankfurt – and gave Arminia important points in the table cellar. In the surprising 2-0 (2-0) in Frankfurt, the Austrian shone with a goal and a technically highly demanding preparatory work. He is a “creative player”, said Kramer, and you shouldn’t take that away from him.

Wimmer first hit the lead coolly (5′), then reappeared in the penalty area, elegantly dragged his right foot past his supporting leg and skilfully tipped the ball onto the chest of Alessandro Schöpf (27′), who easily shot it from close range scored the second goal. Kramer celebrated, but Wimmer not only delighted his coach with the Rabona cross.

“There’s something crazy and carefree about him”

The 20-year-old simply has this “juvenile insanity. He has something crazy and carefree,” said the again strong Arminia goalkeeper Stefan Ortega on the “DAZN” microphone and joked: “What you’ve seen from him throughout the season is exciting sometimes and then it drives you mad.”

As self-confident as the Austrian junior national player, who came from Austria Vienna in the summer, acted on the field, he was just as cautious about his brilliant preliminary work afterwards. “During the action I didn’t trust my left foot,” admitted Wimmer: “If that doesn’t work out, I also know that I can listen to something properly.”

In any case, the win was more important to the man of the evening than his feat. “We’ve had a good phase lately,” said Wimmer – after all, the relegation candidate has been unbeaten for five games. But there is still a long way to go before we reach our big goal. “It’s important that we’re above the line in the end,” said Ortega. “You shouldn’t write us off.”

As in the weeks before, the team with the best runs in the league worked the entire season in the surprise coup in Frankfurt – and earned special praise from the opposing coach. “They covered more than 128 km, that’s sensational. It shows how much they invest,” said Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner.

The team found each other after a difficult start. The “squirrel tactic” proclaimed by sports director Samir Arabi gives Arminia hope for a third season in the upper house. His team sacrificed themselves and showed passion, said Kramer: “We’re enjoying this win and the weekend and then we’ll continue to work.”
