Former tournament winner Simona Halep has reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon without dropping a set and joins Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur as the big favorite for the title.
The Romanian hardly gave the American Amanda Anisimova a chance at 6: 2, 6: 4 and is in the top four for the third time after her triumph in 2019 and 2014.
There she meets Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia) or Jelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) on Thursday. The second semi-final is contested by world number two Jabeur and German tournament surprise Tatjana Maria.
Halep (30) had not found his old form for a long time after a persistent calf injury. This season she sought help from Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou, formerly the successful coach of 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams (USA). The cooperation works, even if Halep experienced moments of shock at the first Grand Slam together.
At the French Open, she suffered a panic attack in her second-round match. The winner at Roland Garros 2018 and Wimbledon the following year said the past 18 months had been “physically and mentally very tough” for her, Halep said she was close to the end of her career.
