Spectacular plan for the Ferrari team AF Corse: According to information from ‘Motorsport-Total.com’, the Italian squad, which will continue its DTM commitment despite the controversial finale at the Norisring, is even considering using a third Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo after!
Unlike the two vehicles in the Red Bull and AlphaTauri design, this should not be financed by the Austrian energy drink group, but by other sponsors.
Team boss Amato Ferrari already had a similar plan last year, but this failed due to financing. In the coming DTM season, however, it should work with the third Ferrari.
Molina brings himself into play for the third DTM Ferrari
But who should sit in the cockpit? That is still unclear, but ex-DTM driver and Ferrari factory driver Miguel Molina spoke up about this a month ago and expressed interest in a comeback at AF Corse in the traditional series.
“Ferrari looked at the championship and recognized a great opportunity,” said the 32-year-old Spaniard, who mainly competed for the Abt squad in the DTM from 2010 to 2016 and then went to AF Corse, on December 9th Podcast “Cafe del padoc” released in 2021 by the major Catalan radio station “RAC1”.
“DTM could be a very good option”
“Last year they had two cars and they want to expand their cars,” continues the three-time DTM winner. “I would love to come back and try to fight for the championship like Liam Lawson did this year.”
His goal for 2022 remains the Endurance World Championship WEC, in which Molina will start again for AF Corse, but “usually I combine two or three championships. It could be a very good option to combine them with the DTM, but that lies not me, but Ferrari and AF Corse.”
According to the current status, there is only one overlap between the DTM and WEC calendars: The Fuji guest appearance of the Endurance World Championship will take place on September 11th, when the DTM will be guest at Spa-Francorchamps. Even with Alex Albon 2021, that was no obstacle to putting him in the cockpit.
Which speaks financially for a third Ferrari
There are also financial reasons why AF Corse is even thinking about a third car: If you already make the effort for two cars, then the total costs for a third car decrease.
“That’s due to the transport costs,” explained Grasser team boss Gottfried Grasser to ‘Motorsport-Total.com’ last year. “With four cars you need the next truck. With three it works with two trucks. With four cars you need two team managers, you can do three cars with one.”
Who is sitting in the two Red Bull Ferraris?
It will therefore be interesting to see whether the team led by Sport Director Ron Reichert, who is responsible for the DTM, will actually expand the DTM line-up for 2022 and which drivers will start the season with. Because it is currently still unclear who Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko will pull out of a hat as the successor to Liam Lawson and Alex Albon.
It is very unlikely that the cockpits of the cars financed by Red Bull will be occupied by juniors: In addition to Lawson, who has taken himself out of the game, Jüri Vips, Jehan Daruvala, Dennis Hauger and Ayumu Iwasa are also for Formula 2 -Season 2022 confirmed.
Jonny Edgar, Jak Crawford and Isack Hadjar, on the other hand, will start in Formula 3, while Jack Doohan is no longer part of the squad. In 2022 there will be five collisions between the dates of the DTM and the two series, which makes a double program impossible.
