Werder Bremen extended with leading player Friedl

First division returnees Werder Bremen can continue planning with Marco Friedl. The defender extended his contract with the green-whites prematurely, as the Bundesliga club announced.

As usual, the North Germans did not provide any information about the new contract period.

“Marco took another really big step in his development last year. Both on and off the pitch. He has matured into a leading player in our team and we are happy that we will continue on this path with him.” said sports director Clemens Fritz.

Friedl (24) moved from Bayern Munich to the Weser in January 2018. “I developed into a Bundesliga player at Werder and have already played more than 100 competitive games here for the pros. I’m happy that Werder is continuing,” said the Austrian.

Werder coach Ole Werner also welcomed the extension. “Marco has a good charisma on the pitch and as a central defender he brings a lot to the table, both in terms of defensive behavior and opening the game. I’m sure that his development isn’t over yet,” said the Bremen coach.
