Volkswagen boss renewed criticism of VfL Wolfsburg

Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess has again called for a significant increase in performance from the Bundesliga footballers at VfL Wolfsburg.

In view of the large financial support from the parent company, he expects “that they will perform much better and achieve better results than last time,” said Diess at the VW works meeting after a report by “Wolfsburger Nachrichten”.

The Volkswagen Group has been the 100 percent shareholder of VfL Wolfsburg Fußball GmbH since 2007. Diess said at the works meeting that VW spends around 150 million euros a year on professional football at its headquarters. This includes all payments from personnel costs to sponsorship. In addition, a control and profit transfer agreement between VW and VfL regulates that the club must transfer its balance sheet profits to the group, but vice versa its losses are compensated.

The 63-year-old Diess had already criticized the performance of the footballers at the beginning of May in a joint talk format of the daily newspapers “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung” and “Wolfsburger Nachrichten”.

“I’m not satisfied because we have a very expensive team. Our club is one of the best equipped in Germany. And I think the performance is too weak for that,” he said. After three sportingly successful years, VfL fell to twelfth place in the Bundesliga table last season. With the new head coach Niko Kovac, the Wolfsburg now want to improve significantly again.
