The Volleyball Bundesliga (VBL) has set the timetable for the intermediate round after the men’s main round was canceled due to corona. The eight best of the original nine teams will meet in two groups of four from January 22 to March 5, with only TSV Haching Munich eliminated. The play-offs will then take place from March 12th to May 8th.
The classification of the two groups (places 1-4 and places 5-8) was based on the table placement, which was determined according to the quotient rule. In Group A (1-4) there are champions Berlin Recycling Volleys, United Volleys Frankfurt, last season’s DVV Cup winners, SWD powervolleys Düren and record champions VfB Friedrichshafen. In Group B (5-8), SVG Lüneburg, Netzhoppers KW-Bestensee, WWK Volleys Herrsching and Helios Grizzlys Giesen meet.
The teams play a first and second round game within the groups in free-for-all mode. Before the start of the intermediate round, all points from the main round were deleted and new points were awarded based on the main round placement. The first in each group receive nine points (main round places 1 and 5), the second six points (places 2 and 6), the third start with three points (places 3 and 7) and those at the bottom of the group (places 4 and 8) with zero points in the intermediate round.
“The termination of the main round gives the men’s teams the opportunity to regenerate and collect themselves after turbulent weeks with numerous game abandonments,” said Julia Retzlaff, VBL Managing Director Sport: “By adapting the test regulations, we also hope that the susceptibility to disruption will be less Game operations for the upcoming intermediate round and the play-offs.”
