Golf pro Thomas Pieters has won the first tournament of the year on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) and thus celebrated the biggest win of his career so far.
The 29-year-old Belgian prevailed at the Abu Dhabi Championship with a total of 278 shots ahead of Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello and India’s Shubhankar Sharma (both 279). For his sixth tour success, Pieters received around 1.33 million US dollars.
Maximilian Kieffer from Düsseldorf finished the US$8 million tournament in the United Arab Emirates with 294 strokes in shared 65th place. Regensburg’s Matthias Schmid failed after two laps at the cut and was eliminated early.
Germany’s top golfer Martin Kaymer is taking a longer break after the birth of his son Sam. The two-time major winner from Mettmann won the tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
