Thiem loses to Berrettini in the semifinals

Former US Open winner Dominic Thiem missed his first final after a long injury break, but showed a clear upward trend at the ATP tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland. The 28-year-old Austrian lost to world number 15 in the semifinals. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 1-6, 4-6.

Thiem had been out for months after a wrist injury and fell far behind in the ranking. By entering his first semifinals on the ATP tour since May 2021, he will at least return to the top 200 from Monday.

Berrettini will play in Sunday’s final against either world number five Casper Ruud (Norway) or Albert Ramos (Spain) for his third title of the year and his eighth tournament win overall.
