“There is a lack of consistency, mentality and also class”

After the 2:5 swatter against Bayer Leverkusen, Lothar Matthäus gave Borussia Dortmund a devastating testimony. According to the record national player, BVB can finally bury their hopes of winning the championship.

FC Bayern does not have to worry about the championship despite the absence of Manuel Neuer, who underwent knee surgery, said record national player Lothar Matthäus in his column on “Sky”. The reason: the weak performance of pursuers Borussia Dortmund.

“The best proof” was the bitter bankruptcy against the Werkself, said Matthäus. “Not that the championship would have been really exciting if BVB won. But the last glimmer of hope for a hot fight for the title was finally done with this crashing defeat,” judged the 60-year-old.

“This team simply lacks consistency, mentality and class,” emphasized Matthäus, adding meaningfully: “Dortmund have had a few coaches in recent years, but in the end it’s not enough for the championship title this season either.”

Marco Rose’s team and all other Bayern pursuers lack “that certain something to win the title,” wrote the football expert.

Matthäus: BVB lack continuity

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s Leipzig, Leverkusen or Dortmund: nobody is able to stand up to FC Bayern. And of course that’s also due to Bayern’s better economic opportunities.”

However, the financial alone is not decisive, which Matthäus illustrated with an example: “If the only thing that mattered was the available money, then Hertha, Gladbach or Wolfsburg would not be behind Hoffenheim Freiburg or Union Berlin in the table.”

And so Matthäus also asked the mentality question, which was not discussed for the first time at Borussia. “It’s also a matter of attitude, willpower and, as is so often the case, continuity. And Dortmund simply doesn’t have that,” the 60-year-old put his finger on the wound.

“Of course they depend, very much, on the goals of Erling Haaland. But I don’t think they would have won against Leverkusen even with him,” was the verdict of the TV expert.
