The strange poker around Thomas Müller illuminated

Although Thomas Müller’s contract with FC Bayern expires in the summer of 2023, those in charge of the German record champions have not yet made any move to talk to the 32-year-old about his future. A decision that is quite astonishing in view of the importance of the veteran rock.

It was a funny and yet slightly botched message that Thomas Müller sent on Instagram over the past weekend. There, the FC Bayern attacking whirlwind showed up with a specially made T-shirt with his likeness and that of his namesake Gerd, including the slogan: “500x hat’s müllertel.”

But the imprint wasn’t quite right (anymore). “I probably should have posted that last week,” Müller wrote after scoring his 136th goal in the Bundesliga in the 3-2 win over Leipzig on Saturday. Gerd Müller scored 365 goals in his career – making a total of 501.

Does not matter! What the t-shirt showed impressively: Müller and FC Bayern, this symbiosis fits. This was already proven by the late club icon Gerd, who played for the top Munich club all his life, and that could possibly also apply to Thomas, who has been at the club since 2000 and has now played 641 games for Munich. However, the German national player recently made people sit up and take notice in an interview.

“Nobody has approached me from the club. So you have to see what the future holds,” said Müller in an interview with “Sport Bild” about his contract, which expires in a good 16 months. An honest statement that was quite astonishing, since Müller has been one of the club’s top performers for more than a decade and is considered one of the mainstays of the team alongside Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski.

How irreplaceable Müller is in the offensive of the record champions and how important he is for his teammates was shown again by the national player on the last day of the game when he caused a lot of alarm in the opposing defense and finally also for the interim 1-0 against Leipzig (sport.de– Grade 2.0).

Thomas Müller at the top in Europe

Together with Lewandowski (24 goals/one assist), who also scored against RB, Müller (seven goals, 18 assists) has already scored an incredible 50 points in the Bundesliga this season. No other duo in Europe’s top football has collected so many.

It is hardly surprising that Müller – and not Messi, Mbappé or Ronaldo – is by far the best assist provider in the top 5 leagues with 18 assists.

It remains at least questionable why the club bosses around board member Oliver Kahn did not at least approach Müller with loose talks.

When asked about the Müller statements in “Sport Bild”, Kahn only referred to the contract of the Bayern star on “Sky” and emphasized that the club “does not break out in panic attacks” due to the contractual situation. Sooner or later you will talk to Müller. “But now the full concentration is on the last third of the Bundesliga and the Champions League, everything else will follow then,” Kahn continued.

Nagelsmann: FC Bayern has no “megastress” with Müller

Whether the record champion should actually take his time with Müller can at least be questioned. The departure of Niklas Süle already showed that the impression of a lack of appreciation can lead to a farewell. It shouldn’t be that far with Müller. However, early contact with the 32-year-old, who may be signing the last major contract of his career, could be helpful in convincing him before Müller, who has been courted from England, does not look for a new challenge in his final years.

While the bosses are still waiting, coach Julian Nagelsmann recently emphasized the enormous importance of the 32-year-old and revealed how he would like to convince Müller to stay. “Thomas lives a lot from the recognition he gets over the course of the game and from the key role (in the team). From the coach’s point of view, that sends every signal that needs to be sent,” said Nagelsmann. According to the coach, there isn’t “the mega stress of trying to talk to someone today or tomorrow”.

Müller himself was “relaxed” in the “ZDF” interview on Saturday. It will be seen in the coming weeks when both sides will sit down. However, the Bayern star did not rule out a move abroad. “In general, there are no desired goals or anything else with such stories, you just have to look at the overall situation,” said the national player, who recently declared that he wanted to play at the highest level until at least 2025.

Whether he will actually continue to do so at Bayern will remain open at least until the summer. By then at the latest, the rumor mill about Müller will be particularly hot. Whether an extension with the longest-serving Bayern professional will then be cheaper should also play a role in the considerations of those responsible.

The fact that extensions with players whose working paper expires in 2023 is possible and sensible was recently shown by Kingsley Coman, who recently extended his contract to 2027. Müller will certainly have observed this development with interest.

President Herbert Hainer recently said: “Thomas Müller belongs to FC Bayern like the Frauenkirche belongs to Munich.” The club should try all the more to literally leave the church in the village and send Müller a clear signal quickly.

Nagelsmann and the Bayern fans should be happy anyway if Müller soon – instead of wearing a T-shirt with a 500 on the chest – poses with the FCB bosses on Instagram and Co. with a jersey with at least one 2025 on the back indicates.
