For national coach Barbara Rittner, the quarter-final duel between Tatjana Maria (34) and Jule Niemeier (22) was “great advertising for German women’s tennis.”
She was “proud of both,” said Rittner to “SID” after Maria’s three-set victory: “It was to be expected that it would be an incredible fight, with Tatjana’s finesse and Jule, who went to the net. It was really fun to watch .”
Rittner, who had closely followed Maria’s career, begrudges the mother of two “her greatest success by far. If one deserves it, then she,” said the 49-year-old. Rittner also found admiring words for Niemeier, who had played at Wimbledon for the first time.
“Jule has shown that this is just the beginning. There is so much more to it. We will have a lot of fun with her,” said the longtime Fed Cup boss.
