Sweden follows Spain in the final

Defending champions Spain and record European champions Sweden have reached the final of the European Handball Championship.

In their semifinals, the Iberians defeated world champion Denmark 29:25 (13:14), the Swedes retained the upper hand against Olympic champion France with 34:33 (17:14).

For the Spaniards, the final on Sunday (6:00 p.m.) is about their third European Championship gold in a row, for the Scandinavians it would be their first title win in 20 years.

The best Spanish thrower in front of 7286 spectators on Friday evening in the MVM Dome in Budapest was right winger Aleix Gomez Abello with eleven goals. For the Danes, who have been waiting for a European Championship title since 2012, top star Mikkel Hansen (8 goals) scored the most.

In the second semi-final, the Swede Jim Gottfridsson from SG Flensburg-Handewitt became the top scorer of the vice world champion with nine goals, Hugo Descat scored eight times for the French. France will now play Denmark for the bronze medal on Sunday (3:30 p.m.).

Before the semi-finals, Norway had secured fifth place. The team around Sander Sagosen from Kiel (8 goals) defeated Iceland 34:33 (27:27, 16:12) after extra time on Friday afternoon and thus grabbed a ticket for the Handball World Championship, which will be held in Sweden and Poland next year takes place.
