This summer, Steffen Tigges decided to leave Borussia Dortmund and take on a new challenge at 1. FC Köln. Nevertheless, he thinks back to the time at BVB with a lot of gratitude.
“I was able to develop very well at BVB and was allowed to make my debut in the Bundesliga. The fact that BVB gave me their trust also gave me a lot of security,” said the attacker in an interview with “kicker”.
The 23-year-old described how he had developed significantly with the Westphalians in recent years: “In terms of football, I was able to take something from every coach. Most recently with Marco Rose it was the pressing, the tackle behavior that we practiced intensively.”
Nevertheless, after three years, the time has come for a fresh start. “Last year I had a good role in the first team. I didn’t say that I absolutely had to leave. I only wanted to try it if a club came along where everything was right. That club was 1. FC Köln.” , Tigges explained his move.
He now has big goals in the cathedral city for the coming season. With the Effzeh he wants to survive the playoffs of the Conference League. In addition, he has made ten scorer points in the Bundesliga.
Tigges wants to get started at 1. FC Köln
However, Tigges does not want to be measured by goals alone. “I’m known for working a lot, playing intensively and always actively helping out in the game against the ball. That’s very important for Steffen Baumgart’s style. And it will always be the first thing I bring to the pitch – Goals and assists only come after that,” said the former Osnabrück player.
The fact that the Rhinelanders transferred around 1.5 million euros to BVB for him does not mean any increased pressure for Tigges.
“The club wanted me and I feel happy that I’m here. That’s an incentive for me. Now I just see what’s in store for me.”
Nevertheless, he is aware of the expectations on the Rhine. “Last season is still having an impact in Cologne, the great euphoria can still be felt. I want to take that with me and do my part to ensure that we are successful.”
