The legal dispute between the Bundesliga soccer club SC Freiburg and residents of the new Europa-Park stadium has been settled. Together with the city and the regional council, the parties agreed on a settlement.
“I’m happy about that, because we achieve such important planning security,” said SC board member Oliver Leki. The club can now also play at home on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons (1.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m.). The starting point was six residents who had filed a lawsuit against the 2018 building permit issued by the Freiburg Regional Council.
Through the settlement, the city has committed not to build on a large tract of forest near the stadium for the next 30 years. In addition, further usage restrictions were set for a period of ten years, which prohibit conversion into a multifunctional hall and no large concerts or open-air cinema events with more than 5000 spectators may be held in the stadium area.
