Ski freestyler Anthony wins first Olympic gold for Australia

Freestyle skier Jakara Anthony has given Australia its first gold medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The 23-year-old prevailed on the mogul slope on Sunday with 83.09 points ahead of the American Jaelin Kauf (80.28).

Russia’s Anastassia Smirnova (77.72) took bronze. World champion Perrine Laffont from France, Olympic champion in 2018 in Pyeongchang, was only fourth. German freestylers were not at the start.

In 1998, Tatjana Mittermayer won silver in Nagano, the only German medal in the mogul discipline, which has been part of the regular Olympic program since 1992.
