Salah shoots Egypt into quarterfinals

Mo Salah and his Egyptians can continue to dream of the title at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Liverpool striker beat the Ivory Coast 5-4 on penalties with the North Africans in the round of 16.

It was 0-0 after 120 minutes. The Egyptians meet Morocco in the quarter-finals on Sunday (5:00 p.m. / DAZN).

Salah personally converted the decisive tenth penalty, goalkeeper Gabaski had previously saved the attempt by Manchester United’s Eric Bailly. Otherwise, the shooters gave no nakedness.

Salah, who recently had to give way to Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the world footballer’s election, can still hope to win the title at the Continental Cup: In 2017 he stormed into the final with Egypt, which he lost 2-1 to Cameroon.

Five years later, Egypt survived the task of Ivory Coast with great difficulty. In a hard-fought duel, Egypt had the better chances, but didn’t take advantage of them.

Omar Marmoush from Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart hit the bar (18th). Even Salah, who kept showing off his extra class, couldn’t get past Badra Ali Sangare in the Ivorians’ goal until the penalty shoot-out.
