In his day, the arrival of Robert Covington to the Portland Trail Blazers seemed like a complete success. Obtained in November 2020, the forward arrived to solve the defensive problems that Lillard and McCollum’s Blazers have always blamed. But it didn’t work quite right. At 30, Robert was still an excellent assist defender within a larger system, but his physical wear and tear kept him from the individual defense the team needed. Now, Covington is positioned as one of the favorites to leave Oregon in a final stretch of transfers that could end the project as we know it.
Brides will not be missing. Covington has already become one of the favorite targets of rumors throughout the league. The latest leaks indicate that Jazz, Timberwolves and Cavaliers would be the main interested parties. The player is in his last year of contract, but he will surely sign for a salary similar to the twelve million dollars that he currently earns, that is, he is one of the expirations more appetizing. Journalist Marc Stein emphasized the possibility of Utah, but Michael Scotto adds Minnesota and Cleveland as the other two most likely options.
In that same item in HoopsHype, drops that there are many more interested franchises. Most likely, once Jerami Grant moves, the market for small forwards/power forwards that includes players like Covington or Harrison Barnes will speed up.
