Promotion hero before moving to Gladbach

After leaving FC Schalke 04, defender Ko Itakura will probably remain in the Bundesliga.

As “Sky” and “Sport1” reported on their online portals late Friday evening, the 25-year-old Japanese completed his medical check-up at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The central defender, who was loaned to newly promoted Schalke from English champions Manchester City last season, is said to agree with the Gladbachers and will be going to the training camp at Tegernsee next week.

An official confirmation of the change should follow shortly.

FC Schalke 04 too clammy for Itakura deal

According to “Sport1”, the Japanese should receive a contract until 2026. A transfer fee of four to five million euros to star coach Pep Guardiola’s club is under discussion.

In Manchester, Itakura still has a contract until June 30, 2023, but no longer has a sporting future.

Schalke would also have liked to have signed Itakura. However, the clammy Revierklub lacked the wherewithal for transfer fee and salary.

On the other hand, Gladbach can obviously lift the deal despite a disappointing previous season in the upper house.
