Pope Francis gives Messi a signed jersey

Pope Francis (85) has swapped shirts with his Argentinian compatriot Lionel Messi (34) across several corners.

The head of the Catholic Church signed a jersey of the Vatican sports club “Athletica Vaticana” on Wednesday and provided it with a blessing for the former world footballer.

The white and yellow jersey has been entrusted to the Bishop of Lyon, Emmanuel Gobilliard, who will hand it over to Messi. Gobilliard is the commissioner of the French Bishops’ Conference for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex presented the Pope with the shirt of Messi’s new club Paris St. Germain with the number 30 on his back during a visit to the Vatican last October. The star striker had written on it: “For Francis with a lot of love.”

During his time at FC Barcelona, Messi had already given the Pope several shirts from the Catalan club. Pope Francis is considered a great football fan. The Argentine’s favorite club is San Lorenzo from Buenos Aires.
