Ousmane Dembélé beckons millions in damages

Former BVB star Ousmane Dembélé is at odds with his current club, FC Barcelona. As is so often the case, in addition to the sporting aspect, the main focus is on the financial side. Now the currently booted offensive man could wave a lot of money.

In the last few days, the quarrel between Ousmane Dembélé and FC Barcelona has been heating up. Most recently, the 24-year-old was not considered for coach Xavi’s squad twice after disagreements about a possible contract extension (including salary waiver) or a quick winter farewell. It is quite possible that this attitude of those responsible for Barca will now have consequences.

As the “kicker” reports, the players’ union AFE Dembélé has backed the cause. “A contract extension must be voluntary, you must not put the player under pressure,” reported the AFE. Because Xavi and the Barca bosses did exactly that with the former BVB professional, the club could now get into trouble.

According to sports director Mateu Alemany (“Dembelé has to leave the club now”), Xavi had emphasized, among other things: “Either he extends his contract or he has to look for a new club.”

The coach could use the services of the attacking winger well. The squad is extremely thin, winger Ansu Fati will probably need another operation and will be out for several months. Dembélé could certainly help with his skills but is not allowed to play at the moment.

Ex-BVB star Dembélé is waving that much money

If the case goes to court because FC Barcelona continues to refuse Dembélé for no reason, the Catalans could face millions in damages, according to the report. There are two monthly salaries for each contract year. Since Dembélé has been playing for Barca since 2017, five years would result in almost a further annual salary for the former Dortmund player, who is said to earn an estimated ten million euros a year.

While players like Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba recently accepted a salary reduction to free up funds, Dembélé recently switched to stubbornness. “I will not be blackmailed, I am fully motivated and I am available to the club,” he said. The fact that Barca recently signed Ferran Torres for 55 million euros should have confirmed his attitude.
