The German halfpipe snowboarders expect a spectacular contest at the Olympic Games in Beijing in the last competition of superstar Shaun White.
“This is probably the best pipe I’ve ever ridden in,” said Andre Höflich before qualifying on Wednesday (from 5:30 a.m. CET) at the Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou.
The 24-year-old, who finished third at the World Cup in Mammoth Mountain (USA) in early January, believes that “we are experiencing one of the best halfpipe contests of all time and I definitely want to be in the finals”. For Leilani Ettel (Pullach), who is challenged in the women’s qualification from 2:30 a.m., the finals on Thursday are also the goal. The men’s medals will be awarded on Friday.
US superstar White confirmed on Saturday that his fifth Winter Games will be his last. The gold medalist from 2006, 2010 and 2018 justified his decision with “small signs” from his body: “Sometimes it’s this, sometimes that, all the little things that take away valuable training time from me,” he said. The increasing development of other, much younger drivers also influenced his decision.
