Olympics 2022 | Ice hockey: DEB team wins training match against Slovakia

The German ice hockey Olympic team won a training game against Slovakia 5:3 three days before the start of the tournament in Beijing

Tom Kühnhackl, Dominik Kahun, Marcel Brandt, Jonas Müller and Matthias Plachta were the German goal scorers.

“It was great,” said striker Marcel Noebels, who was part of the German squad four years ago when they won the silver medal in Pyeongchang. “A lot has already worked out. It was very good for the feeling. Now we are all looking forward to starting on Thursday.”

Then the Olympic silver medalist from 2018 starts the tournament against record Olympic champions Canada (2:10 p.m. / ZDF and Eurosport). “We can be very optimistic. There is a great will to achieve something here,” said national coach Toni Söderholm.

The game was played on Monday in two halves and with intermittent prescribed overtime phases for both teams. Goalkeeper Danny aus den Birken looked a bit unhappy in the first half, in which all three goals were conceded. At least two of them seemed durable. Aus den Birken had been in goal when he won the silver medal in 2018 and was surprisingly nominated this time after a weak season so far at EHC Red Bull Munich.

It is expected that Matthias Niederberger from champion Eisbären Berlin will be in goal against Canada. The player from Düsseldorf also played against the Slovaks in the second half and seemed much more confident.

Söderholm releases his team on Tuesday. “The boys want to go to other competitions somewhere. They should clear their heads, because after that it gets hectic,” said the Finn.
