Olympics 2022 | Beaten Superstar Hanyu

No world premiere for Japan’s superstar Yuzuru Hanyu, gold for Nathan Chen: Thanks to an almost flawless freestyle, the three-time world champion from the USA became Olympic champion in figure skating at the Winter Games in Beijing.

With a world record of 332.60 points, the 22-year-old relegated Hanyu’s compatriots Yuma Kagiyama (310.05) and Shoma Uno (293.00) to second and third place. Chen inspired the few viewers due to the pandemic to the film music “Rocket man” by Elton John, peppered with numerous maximum difficulties.

For Hanyu, on the other hand, only eighth after the short program, the competition ended with two more disappointments. The 2014 and 2018 Olympic champion botched the planned world premiere of the quadruple axel and fell after four and a half rotations. After another fall at four times Salchow, the 27-year-old had no chance of moving up to a medal. In the end he was fourth.

“I think I did everything and tried everything I could,” said Hanyu after his freestyle. He also put the fall in the quadruple Axel into perspective: “I definitely showed it better than the times before. But of course I also knew that I couldn’t make any mistakes in order to maybe still win.”

The decision in the Capital Indoor Stadium was made without German participation. Four-time German champion Paul Fentz only qualified for the Olympic team competition and returned to Berlin on Monday. The German team took ninth place.

The Olympic figure skating deciders will continue on Saturday (7:00 p.m./12:00 p.m. CEST) with the rhythm dance of the ice dancers. German starters are the two-time national title holders Katharina Müller and Tim Dieck from Dortmund.
