Olympics 2022 | Alpine skiing: Mikaela Shiffrin experiences “big disappointment”

Olympic shock for ski superstar Mikaela Shiffrin: The dominator of the alpine scene and one of the favorites failed after seven goals in the giant slalom in Yanqing. This seems to clear the way for Sara Hector of Sweden, who leads after the first run.

Shiffrin went into the first of six planned races at the Winter Games with start number 7, but didn’t get far: She leaned in too far at a red gate and slid away. She quickly got to her feet and leaned on her sticks in consternation. At the finish she was comforted by mother Eileen.

“The day was over before it really started for me. It’s a big disappointment. I’ll never get over it,” said Shiffrin, but she seemed very composed: “I’m not going to cry now.”

Hector, who has won three of the six giant slaloms in the World Cup this season, set the target time of 57.56 seconds on the demanding but fairly short slope. Katharina Truppe from Austria is second (+0.30 seconds) ahead of Federica Brignone (Italy/+0.42).

Other favorites also struggled. Marta Bassino (Italy) slipped away like Shiffrin and was eliminated. World champion Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland) is 1.51 seconds behind, Petra Vlhova from Slovakia even 1.78.
