For Mikaela Shiffrin, the 2022 Winter Olympics are turning into real sports drama. After the alpine skier was eliminated early in the giant slalom, the American also made a mistake in the slalom. The US star will be supported by compatriot Lindsey Vonn.
Mikaela Shiffrin is one of the most successful athletes in alpine skiing. Ironically, in her parade discipline, the slalom, the American experienced a bitter disappointment at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
So Shiffrin messed up the fourth goal and then had to watch her competitor Petra Vlhova grab the gold medal. “I accelerated, maybe too much,” the 26-year-old summed up her performance: “Maybe because of the pressure, but it’s better to ask a psychologist.”
Ex-colleague Lindsey Vonn gave consolation to Shiffrin after her second exit within a few days. “Unfortunately, that’s ski racing. As disappointing as it is for Mikaela, she risked everything. She pushed her limits,” said the 37-year-old in her role as “NBC” expert.
“That doesn’t detract from her historic career”
In addition, Vonn tried to place the most recent slalom race in the overall context. “Did she make the right tactical decisions? Maybe not. But that doesn’t detract from her historic career,” said the 2010 Olympic champion: “I think she really has to keep perspective. She’s still an immense talent. A great skier , and this one race doesn’t change that.”
Shiffrin herself added to her performance: “It feels like a lot of work for nothing.” But the alpine star still has up to four more chances at the Olympics. On Friday (4 a.m. CET) the women’s Super-G is already on the agenda.
