Speed skater Claudia Pechstein once again emphasized the emotional importance of the role as a possible German flag bearer.
“For me it would be more or less the dot on the i of my career because it would be something very special,” said the 49-year-old after training in Beijing. Pechstein is about to take part in her eighth Winter Olympics.
Alongside Natalie Geisenberger (tobogganing) and Ramona Hofmeister (snowboarding), the long-distance specialist is one of the three candidates to be the flag-bearer of the German team at the opening ceremony on Friday. “All three women who are on the list all deserve it,” said the five-time Olympic champion. “For me it would be absolutely amazing and I would like to do it with honor.”
The first impression of the conditions in the newly built speed skating oval was very positive, reported the five-time Olympic champion. “The ice feels good at first, we’ll see if it’s fast.”
Even if she starts without any pressure and without much hope of a medal, she wants to “do her best and not necessarily finish last,” she said. She “hasn’t had to prove anything to anyone for a long time anyway, but of course I always want to do my best for myself. But I’m not under the pressure now like I was maybe a few years ago.”
