Kevin Volland and goalkeeper Alexander Nübel missed the final of the French Football Cup with AS Monaco.
The team from the Principality lost the semifinals at FC Nantes 4-2 on penalties. Nübel could not defuse any of the attempts from the point, substitute Volland converted his penalty. Nantes now meets OGC Nice in the final, with the final taking place on May 8th at the Stade de France in St Denis.
After 90 minutes the score was 2-2 (1-1), and penalties followed immediately. An own goal by Djibril Sidibe (21′) and Samuel Moutoussamy (74′) brought the goals for Nantes, while Guillermo Maripan (12′) and Myron Boadu (76′) scored for Monaco.
Nantes is now hoping for his fourth cup triumph. Nice, which defeated fourth-tier FC Versailles 2-0 in the semi-finals, has also won the Coupe de France three times so far. Defending champions and record cup winners Paris Saint-Germain lost to Nice in the round of 16 – also on penalties.
