New PSG coach relies on team spirit

At the French soccer champions Paris Saint-Germain, the new coach Christophe Galtier should bring the long-awaited turnaround and finally win international titles.

PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi officially introduced the 56-year-old at a press conference in the Prinzenpark Stadium. Galtier recently coached the first division club OGC Nice.

The new coach got the team in the mood for absolute team spirit. “There will not be a player who is above the team,” he said. “My goal is for this pool of talent to become a great team with great strength. If there are players who fall outside of this framework, they will be eliminated.”

“First and foremost it’s about winning”

The Frenchman was fifth in Ligue 1 with his last club from the Côte d’Azur. Now he should finally lead the Paris star squad to the Champions League title. “First and foremost it’s about winning,” said Galtier.

He now has “players of an incredible level at his disposal”. All players would have to become part of a common project, without compromises. The coach named the Brazilians Neymar and Kylian Mbappé by name. All responsibility for the result does not have to rest on Mbappé.

“He’s a collective player, which must be very strong.” Galtier announced that he wanted to downsize the squad. It doesn’t make players happy if they end up practically not on the pitch. Everyone should be involved in the season.

At PSG, Galtier succeeds Mauricio Pochettino, who succeeded German coach Thomas Tuchel in early 2021. Pochettino’s contract was terminated prematurely. Club boss Al-Khelaifi expressed his thanks to the Argentine. At the same time, he reiterated that the club had never spoken to former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane about becoming PSG coach.
