New contract for Schumacher? Ex-pilot curbs euphoria

Mick Schumacher scored his first points in Formula 1. Last Sunday, the Haas driver finished a convincing eighth place at Silverstone, thus ending his long dry spell. Does the 23-year-old even get a contract extension? Ex-racer Marc Surer curbs the euphoria, but at the same time believes that the knot has burst.

“We’re talking about a race now. You don’t suddenly sign a new contract with a race,” said the Swiss at “Champ1”. After Schumacher made a few mistakes in the first few months of the current Formula 1 season, speculation about a possible end in the premier class had already arisen.

After two good weekends in Canada and Great Britain, the Haas driver was able to end the fuss about himself for the time being.

Has the knot finally burst at Schumacher? Yes, says Surer.

“He had a couple of opportunities and then something always went wrong. Now he’s done it. I trembled for him. When he started fighting with Verstappen, I thought: ‘Watch out, this guy has a car that is not in the best position,'” explained the former Formula 1 driver. Verstappen had caught a piece of debris from sister team AlphaTauri, which from then on got stuck on its underbody and ruined its aerodynamics.

Ebel experienced Schumacher as solved

Kai Ebel, who was on duty for RTL at Silverstone, saw Schumacher in a relaxed mood after the race. “Suddenly you’re there as a driver and everyone congratulates you and that’s a feeling that I don’t think he knew from Formula 1. Max Verstappen also hugged him for a long time. Sebastian [Vettel] arrived,” said the reporter legend.

According to Ebel, this also closed a circle. “Michael Schumacher had always protected Sebastian Vettel a little […] and now comes Sebastian Vettel: ‘Look at little Mick, that’s one who will come too […]'” said the Formula 1 reporter.
