“My wish is …”

Kamal Bafounta only plays a minor role in Borussia Dortmund’s U23 in the 3rd division, the 20-year-old Frenchman currently seems far removed from professional appearances. Against this background, the midfield talent does not rule out a departure from BVB.

“The coach makes his decisions. He has a strong team that he is sticking to. You don’t know what will be in a few months, but at the moment I’m an option and he knows that,” Bafounta said in an interview with “” with regard to head coach Marco Rose.

He has “big goals” at BVB, says Bafounta, “My wish is to help the professional team. But if that is not possible here, then somewhere else. That’s how it is as a professional footballer.”

BVB: “… the team sometimes misses that”

The defensive midfielder added: “Hope gives life, but those who only hope will starve. Everything depends on the club.”

A possible extension of his contract, which expires in the summer, is “in the hands of Marco Rose and the people at BVB who do the planning,” said Bafounta.

He will only reach his top level if I get playing time. I would be willing to bring my fighting and physical skills to bear in midfield, which the team sometimes lacks. There are worse things than extending at Borussia Dortmund at the age of 20. Some players come here and see it as a stepping stone – I don’t. “

BVB captain Marco Reus “a football scientist”

Bafounta, who suffered meniscus damage in the spring of 2019 and was out for months, says he is not yet specifically concerned with a change.

“I’m with a great club. Because of my contractual situation, of course, some clubs take a closer look. But I only concentrate on the sporty and am very relaxed. My advisors take care of everything else,” said the young hopefuls.

Bafounta paid special praise to some prominent BVB club mates. “Bellingham and Haaland are really very complete. But I can learn from everyone. Dahoud is a fine technician, Reus is a football scientist. I watch their qualities and their potential for improvement closely.”

Bafounta moved from FC Nantes to Dortmund in 2018. Since then, he has completed 15 appearances for the U17s and played twice in the Youth League in the BVB jersey. In the current third division season there is only a short stint in his statistics.
