In spring 2021, Christoph Metzelder was sentenced to a ten-month suspended prison sentence by the Düsseldorf District Court after admitting to possessing and distributing child pornography. 14 months later, his former club BVB decided to take a step against the fallen runner-up from 2002.
His name will be removed from BVB’s so-called Walk of Fame. 100 stars engraved with the names of famous and legendary Black and Yellow personalities were embedded in the ground next to the Dortmund stadium 13 years ago to mark the club’s 100th anniversary.
The Metzelder name should disappear by the first Bundesliga home game against Bayer Leverkusen in early August, as BVB Managing Director Carsten Kramer confirmed to the “Bild” on Tuesday: “The Walk of Fame is being edited and repaired anyway. In the course of these measures we will also remove the star from Christoph Metzelder.”
The former Borussia Dortmund defender was honored together with his long-time teammate and current BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl for the special performance at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, when the BVB duo reached the final with the German national team.
Metzelder became German champion in 2002 with BVB
The Westphalia Walk of Fame consists of a total of 100 engraved stars and is a popular photo motif for Dortmund Borussia fans.
In the future, ex-national player Sebastian Kehl will probably be alone on the star with the number 92.
Some time ago, BVB suggested to its former player Metzelder that he end his club membership at Borussia.
The 41-year-old was under contract with Borussia Dortmund between 2000 and 2007 and was also German champion with the club in 2002.
