A few years ago, Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather fought one of the most spectacular boxing matches in recent history. Now the fighters are apparently working on a new edition.
As the martial arts portal “Fight Hype” writes, talks are currently underway between the two sides about a possible rematch. The report relies on internal sources and also cites a recent Instagram post as an indication.
McGregor recently shared a picture of the last duel with Mayweather on the social network and commented meaningfully “I accept”. However, the post has since been deleted.
Should the fight actually take place, the framework conditions would probably set new records. According to “Fight Hype”, Mayweather alone could pocket a high nine-figure sum for his participation.
So it would be likely that the second meeting would even top the financial dimensions of the first record fight. At that time, the American had received around 275 million dollars. His opponent reportedly received $85 million.
Overall, the exchange of blows should have brought in around 600 million dollars. English media are now assuming revenues of over one billion dollars from a rematch.
Mayweather last only active as a show fighter
In August 2017, the superstars held their first fight in Las Vegas after a long lead time. Mayweather won by technical knockout in the tenth round
The so-called “Money Fight” with Mcgregor was Mayweather’s last fight under official boxing rules. After that, only a few show fights of the 45-year-old followed.
In 2018, the former world champion beat up kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. Last year he fought a highly publicized duel with Youtuber Logan Paul, which ended without a winner.
Just a few weeks ago, Mayweather announced that he wanted to return to the boxing ring. Another show fight against MMA fighter Mikura Asakura is planned for September in Japan.
