By summer at the latest, the face of the defense at FC Bayern could change significantly. There have been rumors of a change for some time, especially about Niklas Süle, whose contract expires at the end of June. Should the DFB star actually take off, former Munich captain Lothar Matthäus would already have a list of possible successors ready.
Nominally, FC Bayern has numerous top players in central defense, but the record champions have been struggling with injury concerns again and again this season. In addition, one or the other professional is associated with a change of air – above all Niklas Süle.
In 2017, the beefy defensive man switched from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to Säbener Straße for 20 million euros and subsequently became a world-class sweeper. All the more annoying for those responsible that Süle’s working paper expires in the summer and both sides have not yet been able to agree on an extension.
Record national player Lothar Matthäus therefore believes that FC Bayern “must look around for a central defender”, after all they do not want to “improve the offer for Süle much”. This is from his latest “sky” column out.
The 60-year-old added: “If Süle were to leave, a trained defender might be more important than a central midfielder.”
Matthäus proposes three Bundesliga stars to FC Bayern
Matthäus also provided some potential candidates for the German industry leader. “There are a few very interesting players in the Bundesliga. I’m thinking of Stuttgart’s Mavropanos, Leipzig’s Gvardiol or Bochum’s Bella Kotchap,” said the 1990 world champion.
They would all agree that they “play a really good role in the Bundesliga”, “would definitely be financially feasible for Bayern” and “could develop further under Nagelsmann”, said Matthäus.
In fact, the trio would probably be considerably cheaper, at least in terms of maintenance, than Antonio Rüdiger, who was also traded and would like to leave Chelsea for a free transfer.
