Matthäus advises Ginter and Zakaria to switch to BVB

With Matthias Ginter and Dennis Zakaria, Borussia Mönchengladbach will lose two top performers by the summer at the latest. Record national player Lothar Matthäus has now advised the foals to sell the duo in winter and brought BVB into play as a buyer.

“I think that an early separation is the best thing for everyone and that’s where Borussia Dortmund comes to my mind,” said the 60-year-old on Sunday at “Sky90”.

Ginter in particular, who laced up his shoes for BVB between 2014 and 2017, would suit the Revierklub well, says Matthäus. “He knows Borussia Dortmund and Marco Rose and would certainly strengthen the defence.” Zakaria is in a “similar situation”, according to the former world-class midfielder.

Shortly before the turn of the year, the Gladbachers announced that they would not be extending their contracts, which were due to expire in the summer. Since then, a real quarrel has broken out in coach Adi Hütter’s team over the two regulars. Hütter even put his regular defense chief on the bench against Leverkusen.

BVB: Kehl rejects considerations about a winter change

Matthäus cannot understand the approach of the coach. “You have to accept the decision, but I have a different opinion. If you haven’t noticed, I’ll say it again: Gladbach is in the middle of a relegation battle,” warned the 1990 world champion.

Because of the hardened fronts, there seems to be almost no alternative to a separation in winter, especially since a free transfer of the duo would hit Borussia hard in times of a pandemic.

BVB license player manager Sebastian Kehl immediately rejected considerations about a Ginter change in January. “In winter that’s not an issue for us at all. We’re concentrating on our squad. He’s a national player and is free of charge. That offers opportunities for clubs and players. There’s definitely an international market for him,” commented the designated successor to sports director Michael Zorc Ginter’s situation on Sunday in the “double pass” at “Sport1”.
