Marc Surer counts Formula 1 star: “Basically overwhelmed”

Jost Capito has been head of the traditional British team Williams, which is currently in last place in the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship with three points from seven race weekends, since 2021.

Nevertheless, Marc Surer is convinced that Capito is the right man for Williams “because he knows how to lead a team successfully”.

Surer, a former Grand Prix driver himself and now a proven Formula 1 expert, is referring to Capito’s time as team boss at Volkswagen in the World Rally Championship, in which, with Sebastien Ogier at the wheel, both the driver and the Constructors’ titles were won (2013 to 2016).

However, Capito’s challenge at Williams, a small Formula 1 team, is very different from the task at Volkswagen back then, when the German manufacturer was clearly the favorite.

Good engineers “don’t go to Williams voluntarily”

“Of course it’s a different story when you come into Formula 1 and have to buy your team together,” says Surer. The best engineers “do not go to Williams voluntarily. You have to take the best that are still on the market. He did that.”

When restructuring the Williams team, Capito relies on old acquaintances from the VW days in the World Rally Championship: Francois-Xavier Demaison is Technical Director and is advised by Willy Rampf, Sven Smeets, as Sports Director, takes care of everything directly related to racing has to do.

Surer in an interview on the “Formel1.de” YouTube channel: “The team has to grow together now and you have to work on the weaknesses. I don’t think we will see any improvement before next year.”

Marc Surer: Williams should replace Latifi

The expert is certain of one thing: replacing Nicholas Latifi with a more established pilot would “definitely” help Williams. The Canadian is a driver like his compatriot Lance Stroll, “who sometimes drives really good races, but is fundamentally overwhelmed with the current car”.

“He throws the car away more often than Mick Schumacher,” Surer criticized. On the one hand, that costs money because of the accident damage, “and on the other hand, he doesn’t score any points. Replacing him might also be the better solution financially.”

However, Capito has previously ruled out breaching the contract and evicting Latifi during the current season. The earliest possibility for a driver change would be at the end of the 2022 season.
