Ralf Rangnick has been a coach at Manchester United since the beginning of December. But although the German coach has only lost one of eight games and can point to an average of 1.88 points, there is a lot of crunching behind the scenes for the Red Devils. Now there are details about why Rangnick is currently having such a difficult time.
The “Sport Bild” reports that stars who play little but have a lot of influence create a mood in the background against the 63-year-old, who will take care of the club until the summer. One trio in particular seems to be targeting Rangnick: Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial.
The latter publicly assumed that Rangnick was lying. Earlier, the coach had said that Martial didn’t want to play and that’s why he wasn’t in the squad. It is not yet known where the truth lies. Either way: Rangnick would like to part with all three players and is pushing for a sale.
United legend Gary Neville, meanwhile, fittingly suggested that “something is wrong” within the squad as a whole. “There’s bitching. They’re all attacking each other. The mood in the dressing room is important, but it’s not harmonious at the moment,” said Neville.
It is conceivable that Rangnick’s difficult situation is also due to his status as a transition coach. Because that’s why the German hardly seems to get any wishes from the club bosses fulfilled. According to “Sport Bild”, Rangnick would have liked to sign Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig for midfield in winter.
Rangnick wants ten Hag at Manchester United
The Bundesliga star should be number one on the wish list. According to the report, however, those responsible for United are reluctant to rebuild the squad according to Rangnick’s wishes and requirements because a coach who may have completely different ideas is to take over in the summer anyway.
The bosses should clearly only see Rangnick as an “interim solution”, the paper continues. Meanwhile, talks with successors are being pushed. While Mauricio Pochettino, currently working at Paris Saint-Germain, is considered the preferred candidate, Rangnick, who is to support Manchester United as an advisor from the summer, is said to have spoken out internally for Erik ten Hag from Ajax Amsterdam, according to “Marca”.
“Sport Bild” suspects that the 63-year-old did so in order to be able to exert further influence as a consultant. If Pochettino took over and acted as a classic team manager, Rangnick would probably have little opportunity to influence events, it is assumed.
