Manchester United struggles after embarrassing cup embarrassment

Cristiano Ronaldo hugged the bitterly disappointed Anthony Elanga and tapped his chest two or three times with his index finger on the way to the dressing room.

It was not understood what the superstar said to the 19-year-old, but it may have been: I’m just as guilty. Elanga had missed the decisive attempt on penalties in the embarrassing cup defeat of English football record champions Manchester United against second division FC Middlesbrough – but Ronaldo also failed during the FA Cup game.

“Win, lose, draw – we stick together,” tweeted the club of German coach Ralf Rangnick, who also has 19 points less than leaders Manchester City in the Premier League and no longer has a chance of winning the title. The Champions League remains.

“I think we’ve played well in the league over the past few weeks – and also today in the first half,” said Rangnick during the press conference after the 7-8 EE (1-1, 1-1, 1-0). “I don’t think there are many things we could have done better – apart from scoring goals.” The 63-year-old took over the noble club last December and is considered to be interim coach with his contract until the end of the season.

Ronaldo misses penalties

Scoring goals – the Red Devils had a number of opportunities to do so. First and foremost Ronaldo, who missed a penalty early. The shot by the five-time world footballer just missed the left (20th). Bruno Fernandes hit the post from the most promising position when the score was 1-1 (72nd). “The way I was more than satisfied, but the cup is about winning, we didn’t make it, so we’re extremely disappointed,” said Rangnick.

Former Dortmund player Jadon Sancho (25th) scored to give Manchester the lead, Matt Crooks (64th) brought the second division into overtime. The goal was controversial because Duncan Watmore played the ball clearly with his hand in the formation. “The players are disappointed, we are disappointed, but that’s football,” said Rangnick. “It was our own fault, we should have decided the game in the first half.”
