Official stoppage time (minutes): 1
Tooor for 1. FC Köln, 1:2 by Anthony Modeste
What a goal by Modeste! Pantović plays a sloppy miss on the center line into Kainz’s foot. The Austrian sees that Modeste has no opponent in the center and plays him halfway up. At the edge of the penalty area, the striker lobs the ball beautifully over Riemann. That was made strong by the people of Cologne.
Duda sends Schaub right into the penalty area. The winger dribbles against Soares, but the full-back simply stands still and steals the ball. Strong defending from Bochumer.
Pantović plays a great pass down the right flank into Locadia’s run. The striker pulls from the edge of the penalty area to the short corner. Schwäbe is on the spot and clears the corner, which brings nothing.
The equalizer for Cologne came as a bit of a surprise, but Bochum also had to take a good look at it. The home side also know that Steffen Baumgart’s team is dangerous from crosses.
Tooor for 1. FC Köln, 1:1 by Timo Hübers
Kainz takes a corner from the right to the middle. He finds the head of Özcan, who beheads a man from Bochum. From there the ball bounces against another defender and from there it bounces to Hübers. The central defender shoots the ball into the net five meters free in front of the goal. A lucky goal for FC.
Stafylidis brings a cross into the middle from the right. A Cologne defender clears far too short to Locadia, who shoots from eight meters to the right of the penalty area. Schwebe saves the ball with his right foot.
Bochum obviously feels good now. With Ball they look for creative solutions. The hosts are good against the ball and do not offer the Cologne team any space.
Schwäbe plays a very long ball to Kainz from his own penalty area. The Cologne native actually achieves this, but runs into the gate with the first contact.
From Cologne’s point of view, the goal should never fall like this. When throwing in yourself, the protection was missing. Word should have gotten around in Cologne that VfL likes to counter with the fast Holtmann.
Tooor for VfL Bochum, 1:0 by Gerrit Holtmann
A throw-in on the offensive flies in Cologne’s ears. Bochum clarifies consistently. The ball lands at Locadia, who has only one opponent in front of him on the center line. He creates a bit of space with a trick, Holtmann crosses behind his back and Locadia puts the ball in his path. Nobody can stop Holtmann, who moves into the penalty area on the right and tunnels Schwäbe with the right from six meters.
Hector throws in Ljubicic on the left. He brings the ball well into the middle with the first contact. Modeste is free at the penalty spot and shoots directly, but he doesn’t hit the ball properly. His degree flies over clearly.
Hector brings a second ball unconventionally and harmlessly in front of the goal. Riemann could easily catch the ball but decides to make a fist. As a result, the ball flies uncontrolled through the penalty area. In the end, the Bochum defenders clean up for their goalkeeper.
Schmitz fouls Soares on the left flank. Löwen puts the ball on the back post, but Leitsch only extends it into goal.
Modeste gets an arm against her head again. The Frenchman looks down at the floor and shakes himself. He can continue, but this initial phase was not easy for him.
Counterattack chance for Bochum via Holtmann. The wing is one of the fastest players in the league, so Locadia sends him on the run down the center line right after winning the ball. Holtmann puts the ball far in front of him and shoots at goal from 14 meters on the right side of the penalty area. Schwäbe fends off with his foot.
Holtmann uses Löwen on the right corner of the penalty area, who hits the ball in the penalty area and then pulls it off with the right. His shot goes two meters wide of the far post.
After 15 minutes, both clubs can be attested that they are trying. Bochum’s pressing has worked a little better so far. This is how the home side created the few previous chances.
Kilian rushes into a player from Bochum on the left and is lucky that he doesn’t get a yellow card for it. Löwen flanks the due free kick into the goal.
Cologne gets a first corner kick. The standard is brought into the middle by Schaub. At the second post, Kilian comes to the header. But his bounce is no problem for Riemann, who catches the ball.
Losilla is brought in by a beautiful lob from Pantović from the right. The captain takes a volley from the edge of the penalty area, but Schwäbe is able to parry the central shot. Then the linesman raises the flag.
Bochum has the first chance of the game. Holtmann plays a low cross into the middle from the left, which lands on Pantović. The midfielder shoots from 12 yards but his shot is blocked. The follow-up from the second row by Rexhbeçaj goes over it. There was definitely more to it.
The people of Cologne are also starting up high. Modeste attacks Bochum keeper Riemann, who calmly plays a tight flat pass to his six.
The two teams sniff each other out in the first few minutes. Bochum tries to disrupt early. Cologne has been doing quite well with it so far.
The 750 spectators in Bochum really set the mood.
Steffen Baumgart’s men had to go the full distance on Tuesday. Accordingly, many players from the starting line-up against HSV take a seat on the bench today. The coach makes six changes. Horn and Ehizibue will be replaced at full-back by Hector, who played six on Tuesday, and Schmitz. Özcan starts today in Hector’s position in central midfield. In addition, Kainz, Duda and Schaub replace Schindler, Thielmann and Uth in attacking midfield and Modeste starts up front instead of Andersson.
After the cup success on Tuesday, Thomas Reis sees little reason for change and only changes his starting lineup to two positions. Eduard Löwen starts in central midfield in place of Patrick Osterhage and Kostas Stafylidis replaces Cristian Gamboa at right back.
Tuesday evening was less fortunate for 1. FC Köln. In the round of 16 game against the lower-class HSV, Steffen Baumgart’s team struggled to go into overtime. There, the Hanseatic League took the lead and it was only after a lucky penalty kick in the 122nd minute that FC saved themselves with a penalty shoot-out. There, the last shooter, Florian Kainz, had a curiosity: the Cologne player shot the ball into the goal, but he slipped away when he shot, causing the ball to fly from his right foot to his left. A rule violation and therefore an illegal goal. This eliminated the billy goats from the cup.
Newcomers Bochum got off to a good start in the new year and can welcome the Cologne crowd to Castroper Strasse with confidence. At the beginning of the year, Thomas Reis’ team defeated VfL Wolfsburg 1-0. Then followed a narrow 1-0 defeat against Mainz, which the men from the Ruhr made up for just a few days later. On Tuesday there was another duel against the 05ers in the cup, this time with Bochum having the better end. Thanks to a strong second half and an outstanding Miloš Pantović, the Blue and Whites deservedly won 3-1.
Hello and welcome to the evening game of match day 20 in the Bundesliga. Today at 6:30 p.m., VfL Bochum hosts 1. FC Köln in the Ruhr Stadium.
