Van Aert doesn’t have enough

You’ve almost been waiting for it – and it’s finally back! Wout van Aert is pedaling hard once again, tearing a small gap to the big peloton. Jakob Fuglsang and Quinn Simmons are hanging in the slipstream directly behind the yellow jersey’s rear wheel.

73

13:37

Tour back in the motherland

The approximately 70-kilometer detour to Belgium is over. The entire tour entourage crosses the border into France near the village of Regniowez. In just a few minutes, the Côte des Mazures, the first mountain classification of the day, will be lurking.

69

13:32

Van der Poel is behind

While things are happening at the front of the field, Mathieu van der Poel seems a bit battered at the other end of the peloton. The Dutchman has been far behind since the beginning of the stage and grimaces convulsively. Max Walscheid is also fighting to catch up.

67

13:29

end of the escape

That’s it again! At this moment, the eleven-strong lead group around Georg Zimmermann and Simon Geschke is swallowed up by the peloton – also means that there is no peace in sight and further attacks will follow.

64

13:25

Who are the Leaders?

Let’s take a quick look at the entire leading group: Vegard Stake Laengen, Christophe Laporte, Stan De Wulf, Kasper Asgreen, Simon Geschke, Andreas Leknessund, Georg Zimmermann, Magnus Cort, Conor Swift, Franck Bonnamour and Mads Pedersen are currently driving the peloton at twelve seconds ahead.

60

13:20

Eleventh professional on top

It remains to be seen whether the leading group will remain in the end. The peloton still has a good view of the leaders. In the meantime, Franck Bonnamour from the B&B Hotels – KTM team has also moved up the field as the eleventh rider.

57

13:17

The hourly mean

Would you like proof of the high intensity of the first hour of racing? The hourly average is 52.53 km/h, despite the currently prevailing tailwind, a remarkable value on this actually undulating terrain in the Ardennes. From the spectator’s point of view, it’s welcome to continue like this!

54

13:13

What does Bora-hansgrohe do?

There are now quite a few teams in the leading group. Ironically, the German team Bora-hansgrohe missed the connection, although they have driven very offensively in the course of the stage so far. Will Nils Politt and Maximilian Schachmann follow up again or will they stay at the top?

50

13:09

Next attempt

This time, a top group of ten breaks away from the rest of the main field! Among others, the two Germans Georg Zimmermann as well as Simon Geschke, Christophe Laporte and Magnus Cort are there. The cushion is still only eleven seconds.

46

13:04

No relaxation on the horizon

After the strenuous section of the day before, including all the cobblestone passages, quite a few experts expected a more relaxed day today. But on the contrary: Here things really get down to business again, Wout van Aert in particular wants to know and is probably aiming for his second stage success of this tour year.

42

13:01

field together again

Now Benoit Cosnefroy, Toms Skujins and Taco van der Hoorn are set. And the next exciting race situation arises immediately, because with Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar, big names are at the front and pushing hard on the tube – what an intense start to this stage!

40

13:01

Leadership trio in sight

The main drivers of Wout van Aert’s will are also Benoit Cosnefroy, Toms Skujins and Taco van der Hoorn. Because of the high speed, the trio is only 20 seconds ahead of the peloton and will probably have to give up their escape in a few moments.

38

12:56

Van Aert comes again!

Wout van Aert doesn’t give up and breaks away easily from the peloton again. Although the peloton is stretched by the Belgian’s next attack, UAE Team Emirates recaptures the yellow jersey after a few moments.

35

12:52

Does Politt want to move forward?

The German champion Nils Politt does not seem to be satisfied with the racing situation. Again and again he tries to get away and seems very active – still without success. Maximilian Schachmann, teammate from Bora-hansgrohe, is also often involved at the front.

32

12:49 p.m

Top trio slowly drives away

The cushion of Benoit Cosnefroy, Toms Skujins and Taco van der Hoorn had meanwhile increased to over a minute. However, due to Wout van Aert’s renewed attack, the trio lost around 20 seconds again.

29

12:49 p.m

Next attempt by van Aert

A second time Wout van Aert competes himself and creates a small gap between himself and the peloton. However, Tadej Pogačar is right there with some riders from UAE Team Emirates and catches the Belgian in the yellow jersey again.

26

12:47 p.m

waves with the crowbar

Tim Wellens from Lotto Soudal tries it on his own and wants to close the gap to the leading trio. Amund Grøndahl Jansen, who is traveling for the BikeExchange-Jayco team, follows and separates himself a few meters from the peloton.

24

12:40 p.m

Trio still ahead

Benoit Cosnefroy, Toms Skujins and Taco van der Hoorn are still leading the race with a small lead. However, the peloton has not calmed down yet, other professional cyclists are trying to escape and want to get to the top.

21

12:36

Attack by van Aert

Even Belgian Wout van Aert, who wears the yellow jersey, wants to join the breakaway himself. However, the main field does not let the overall leader go and closes a small gap immediately.

19

12:36

new attack

Now a trio has been able to break away from the main field by around ten seconds. Benoit Cosnefroy, Toms Skujins and Taco van der Hoorn try to escape together, but the group may still be too small.

17

12:33 p.m

field together again

After a few kilometers the peloton found each other again! Nils Politt did very important tracking work and brought his captain Aleksandr Vlasov back to Tadej Pogarcar and Wout van Aert.

15

12:31

Threatening wind edge

Even the entire main field is slowly tearing apart! The wind is howling heavily across the road at the moment, allowing a group of around 20 riders to break away from the rest of the peloton. Among others, Tadej Pogarcar, Wout van Aert and Peter Sagan made the leap forward.

12.

12:29

Van Aert still in the yellow jersey

Despite the turbulent cobblestone stage to Arenberg, the yellow jersey still rests on Wout van Aert’s shoulder. The Belgian’s first pursuer is now EF Education-EasyPost’s Neilson Powless, who was part of the break yesterday and is now just 13 seconds back. The Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen follows in third place, before the tour favorite Tadej Pogačar lurks in place. The Slovenian, employed by UAE Team Emirates, is 19 seconds behind van Aert.

10

12:26

Van der Poel and Martin fight

At the end of the peloton, the first riders already have to suffer from the pace. Mathieu van der Poel and Guillaume Martin, for example, bite their teeth hard and tear a small hole. Meanwhile, the German Nils Politt can be found consistently at the front for the first few kilometers.

8th.

12:24

Extremely high speed

The pace is very high in the first phase, the professional cyclists are currently traveling at around 70 km/h! That’s why nobody can withdraw at the moment. However, Mathieu Burgaudeau will find it very difficult to get back into the field at this speed and is already fearing the time limit.

5.

12:21

First fall

It has already cracked for the first time! Mathieu Burgaudeau, also from the TotalEnergies team, is lying on the side of the road and has to be treated by the tour doctor – not a nice start after the small fall festival the day before.

3.

12:20 p.m

Vuillermoz attracts

Frenchman Alexis Vuillermoz from Team TotalEnergies is at the front at the top. Among others, the Dutchman Taco van der Hoorn, who narrowly missed out on winning the stage in second place yesterday, is hanging on his rear wheel.

1.

12:17

Here we go!

Tour Director Christian Prudhomme waves his famous flag from the race control vehicle, thus opening the 6th stage! As usual, only a few moments elapse before the first attacks are made in the front field.

12:11

It’s rolling

The big peloton was just starting to move. The professional cyclists roll through the starting point in Binche at a leisurely pace for another five minutes before tour director Christian Prudhomme finally gives the go-ahead for the race.

12:05

Review of the previous day

One day after the exhausting ordeal over the cobblestones, the riders will be at the start pretty much shaken up. As expected, the pavé sections from Lille to Arenberg threw up the general classification. The beneficiary was once again last year’s winner Tadej Pogačar, who presented himself excellently and crossed the finish line ahead of all other classification drivers. On the other hand, Primoz Roglic fell and lost a lot of time. The Australian Simon Clarke snatched the coveted stage win from a five-man breakaway group. Wout van Aert continues to hold the leader’s yellow jersey.

11:53

The daily program

During the first three stages, the Tour de France already gave a guest performance in Denmark, now it is Belgium’s turn, at least for a short time. From Binche, the 220-kilometre route runs over undulating terrain through the Ardennes back to France before a rock-hard finish awaits in Longwy. With six kilometers to go before the finale, the drivers have to climb 800 meters with an average incline of 12.3 percent. Only 1.6 kilometers before the finish, there is another steep ramp to overcome, which promises excitement right to the end.

11:45

Welcome to the 6th stage!

Have a wonderful good day and welcome to the sixth day of competition of this year’s Tour de France! Between yesterday’s cobblestones and the Alps ahead, a hilly stage from Binche to Longwy awaits the riders. The sharp start is planned for 12:15 p.m.
