Jokic ends the Pelicans with a 46-point triple-double

Nikola Jokic gave the Nuggets another win with another MVP-worthy display. The pivot put his team on his back to defeat some combative Pelicans 138-130 who forced him to deploy the best version of him to beat them, something that did not happen until after playing an extension. In this, the Serbian’s talent prevailed, and he managed to close the game adding a triple-double of 46 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists that places his performance in a historic place.

And it is that, as if that were not enough, Jokic was incredibly efficient, as he managed to score 16 of his 22 field goals, becoming the second player in history to sign a triple-double of more than 45 points with more than 70% of success, something that only Wilt Chamberlain, who did it in March 1968, had achieved before him. If we add the 4 blocks and 3 steals of the Serbian, we are facing an unprecedented performance in the NBA, at least since these two statistics are counted.

All in all, perhaps the most spectacular thing about Nikola’s performance is the way he managed to give his team the victory almost single-handedly. After an overwhelming start (Denver went on to win by 21 in the first quarter), the Nuggets gradually fell behind, and the Pelicans took control of the game to the point of having several double-digit leads in the last quarter. That’s when Jokic’s real display began, as he scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws with 3 seconds left, to force overtime.

Already in extra time, the pivot added another 7 points to allow his team to take their 38th victory, signing 30 of the 54 points that the Nuggets scored between the last quarter and extra time. The cries of “MVP” by the Ball Arena and his companions were immediate, and of course they cannot be considered undeserved.

“It’s a luxury to have an MVP in a game that goes into overtime and to know that your entire game can go through him,” Malone said. «They have tried to make him a 2vs1 and he has taken the ball for Morris to score a triple. It gives us a lot of confidence knowing that when push comes to shove he’s going to make a good play time after time. The way he has stepped forward speaks to the greatness of him.”

With his performance, Jokic not only allowed the Nuggets to add another victory, but also overshadowed the also great night of Brandon Ingram, who went up to 38 points and 9 assists and came to put Colorado on the ropes. The forward commanded some Pelicans in which CJ McCollum and Jonas Valanciunas, with 24 and 19 points respectively, also stood out, and who offered a truly worthy image despite seeing their streak of four consecutive victories cut short. The Louisianans suffered a minor setback in their pursuit of the Lakers for ninth place, but they still have many games ahead of them to fight for that spot.
