Japan despite defeat in ice hockey quarterfinals

The Japanese ice hockey players have reached the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games in Beijing despite a defeat in a close duel with China.

The leaders of Group B lost to the hosts 2-1 after a penalty shoot-out, but secured one of the first three places early on by winning a point.

All five teams from Group A, which is higher in the world rankings, are automatically in the quarter-finals, plus three teams from Group B. China, currently third with five points, has a good chance with the win.

Mi Le, born Hannah Miller in Canada, converted the only penalty in the shootout. Previously, seven shooters had forgiven.
