Ski jumping legend Janne Ahonen proved his old class in a short comeback.
The 44-year-old took part in the Finnish Championships in Lahti for fun – and finished third. With jumps of 110.0 and 116.0 m, the five-time winner of the Four Hills Tournament was only beaten by Antti Aalto and Eetu Nousiainen.
“Hopefully I don’t win,” Ahonen said before the competition and then clearly exceeded expectations. His son Mico Ahonen finished 15th with 90.0 and 103.0 m, well behind him. Janne Ahonen will also be at the Olympic Games in Beijing – but only as a TV expert.
Ahonen had declared his career over three times – in 2008, 2011 and most recently in 2018. He had returned twice, but ruled out a third comeback. “I just want to have fun,” said the 2005 world champion.
