Is FC Bayern on “Plan B”?

If Niklas Süle leaves Bayern Munich in the summer, there may not be a replacement for the central defender who is moving to BVB. But is the well-considered internal solution with Lucas Hernández and Dayot Upamecano right at all? Experts have their doubts and believe in a transfer.

The hefty 2: 4 smack at VfL Bochum clearly brought to light FC Bayern’s defensive problems that had been smoldering for a long time. Hardly any player from the defensive line presented itself in normal form. Dayot Upamecano, who was signed by RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 and has not been up to speed for weeks, was particularly worrying. After the Süle departure, this should become part of the new Bayern defense center.

“I see a player who has an incredible amount of potential and has everything he needs to be an outstanding central defender, but who can’t handle the pressure at Bayern and seems incredibly insecure,” said former FCB professional and current TV expert Markus Babbel at Sky.

The 23-year-old finds the transition from the Red Bulls to Munich football difficult. “It’s not that you’re constantly challenged at FC Bayern for 90 minutes, but you have seven or eight actions where you have to be there – and he has to step up there,” demanded the 49-year-old.

Dietmar Hamann was even clearer. “I don’t think you can go into the next season with Upamecano and Hernández in the current condition,” the “Sky” expert put his finger in the wound and pointed out that Tanguy Nianzou has not yet had the desired development has.

Is Schlotterbeck “Plan B” of FC Bayern?

“You have to think about your options if Süle leaves,” Babbel looked back at the presumably vacant position in central defence. “It would be extremely negligent if you went into a negotiation without having a plan B.”

According to Hamann, this plan B could be Nico Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg. “Schlotterbeck is the most likely variant for me. I could imagine that one or the other phone call was made after the game in Bochum,” said the former professional of the record champions and added: “Bayern shouldn’t have another one up their sleeve have, they will really step on the gas.”

A Schlotterbeck transfer to Munich seems conceivable for Hamann, above all because of the consistent quality in the game of the Freiburg defender.

“He doesn’t have the bucks that Upamecano already had in Leipzig. I think he’s a very reliable player. He’s also good at opening the game. For me he fits in there,” explained the 48-year-old and added to: “He’s still young, if he plays with better players, he’ll make another jump.”
