Other worries in the German Olympic team for Beijing: Speed skater Joel Dufter is worried about participating in the Winter Games (February 4 to 20) because of a corona infection. The sprinter complains of a sore throat, a stuffy nose and a headache and will not travel to China with the speed skating team on Saturday as planned.
“My PCR result is not clear, it is something between positive and negative. In Germany I count it as negative, in China it would be positive,” said Dufter to “SID” on Tuesday. Another test on Wednesday should provide information about the course of the disease. “Then I can say more,” said Dufter, “it will be a close story.”
In China, the CT reference value for corona tests is 35. It was only recently lowered from 40 to the new value. In Germany, the limit is 30, people who have been tested are no longer contagious from this value. The lower the CT value, the higher the viral load in the body is usually with COVID-19.
Fragrance plans to start in the 500m (February 12) and 1000m (February 18). “There is still a chance, I hope I can take it,” said the 26-year-old.
Dufter is not the first member of the German Olympic team to fear for the start because of Corona. Two-time skeleton world champion Axel Jungk and junior world champion Hannah Neise recently tested positive. Previously, ski jumper Andreas Wellinger’s dream of a third Olympic gold had burst due to a corona infection.
Among the biathletes, there have recently been positive cases with medal hopes Franziska Preuß and Johannes Kühn, both of whom have survived their infection.
