Human rights commissioner sees Qatar World Cup as an opportunity

The Federal Government’s Human Rights Commissioner, Luise Amtsberg, sees the World Cup in Qatar (21 November to 18 December 2022) as an opportunity.

“The view of the world public is on such events,” said the Green politicians in the morning program “RTL / ntv Frühstart”.

Attention to the massive human rights violations in Qatar is important and has “already led to improvements at the legal level”. However, Amtsberg also pointed out that the legal improvements had not yet been sufficiently implemented in reality. “It can happen that you achieve improvements, but you have to stay on the ball,” said the human rights officer.

The 37-year-old, who has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013, also takes responsibility for German politics: “We have a diplomatic mandate to press Qatar further.”

Amtsberg emphasized that beyond this year’s World Cup, Qatar would be an integral part of the global political arena. It is therefore clear that German politics must remain active on the subject of human rights in Qatar.
