Hamburg coach Calles is switching to the competition

Pedro Calles (38) is the new coach at former German basketball champions EWE Baskets Oldenburg. The Spaniard comes from league rivals Hamburg Towers and will receive a contract until 2025, the Oldenburg announced on Wednesday.

“The club has done a lot of things right in its history and is rightly one of the best organizations in the BBL. My goal is to get Oldenburg back where it belongs in terms of sport,” said the new head coach. The EWE Baskets had played against relegation for a long time in the completely disappointing last season.

Calles sensationally led Rasta Vechta to the play-off semifinals in the 2018/19 season and went to Hamburg a year later. In Oldenburg, the coach follows “rescuer” Ingo Freyer, whose contract was not renewed. At the end of January, the former German national player took over the then bottom-placed EWE Baskets.
