Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, the world athletics association canceled the half marathon world championships in Yangzhou, China. This decision was announced by World Athletics on Tuesday after consultation with the local organizing committee and the Chinese Athletics Association.
The title fights were originally supposed to take place in March, but in November they were postponed to November 13 due to the corona. Now they are to be integrated into the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga (September 30th and October 1st) together with the newly created decisions over 5 km. In addition, the 2027 Road Running World Championships were awarded early to Yangzhou.
China is the last major economy in the world to pursue a strict zero-COVID strategy. The state recently reacted to the increasing number of cases with strict isolation orders and close-meshed test campaigns.
