Golf pro Thomas Pieters has won the first tournament of the year on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) and thus celebrated the biggest win of his career so far.
The 29-year-old Belgian prevailed at the Abu Dhabi Championship with a total of 278 shots ahead of Spain’s Rafa Cabrera Bello and India’s Shubhankar Sharma (both 279). For his sixth tour success, Pieters received around 1.33 million US dollars.
Maximilian Kieffer finished the $8 million tournament in the United Arab Emirates in 65th place with 294 strokes. Matthias Schmid had already failed at the cut after two laps and was eliminated early.
Germany’s top golfer Martin Kaymer is taking a longer break after the birth of his son Sam. The two-time major winner had won the tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
